Cosmetic vs culinary argan oil: do not mix them up

Two argan oils, two uses. Clear cosmetic vs culinary comparison: taste, sizes, labels and when to buy which. Biomedica Morocco guide.

On this page
Searching cosmetic vs culinary argan oil usually means you already risked the mix-up: cooking oil on the face, or cosmetic oil in a salad. They are not the same product. Here is how to tell them apart before you buy.
In one line
Cosmetic = skin and hair (small bottles, often cold-pressed). Culinary = cooking (often toasted kernels, nutty taste, 250 ml). Do not swap them.
Cosmetic argan oil: who and what for
Cosmetic oil is packed for skin and hair use. It is usually mild or lightly vegetal in smell and dosed in drops. It is not meant to be eaten.
Use a thin layer on the face, dry body areas or hair ends. Very oily skin often starts with one drop at night. Oily scalps should keep oil on the lengths only.
Typical Biomedica sizes: 40 ml, 60 ml, 100 ml, plus duos argan & prickly pear and argan & rose.
How-to: how to use argan oil. Realistic expectations: benefits. Targeted routines: face and hair.
Culinary argan oil: for the table
Culinary argan oil is for seasoning (salads, couscous, amlou, finishing). Kernels are often toasted, which gives a strong hazelnut taste — great in food, wrong as a face serum.
In Moroccan cooking it is often added as a finish rather than at prolonged high heat, to keep the aroma. Always follow your label.
Dedicated size: culinary argan oil 250 ml. Store like a table oil and never pour it into a cosmetic routine “for lack of something better”.
Quick comparison
- Use — Cosmetic: skin / hair · Culinary: cooking
- Taste / smell — Cosmetic: discreet · Culinary: toasted nut
- Common size — Cosmetic: 40–100 ml · Culinary: 250 ml
- Process — Cosmetic: often cold-pressed (check label) · Culinary: often roasted
- Never — Cosmetic on the plate · Culinary on the face
How to read the label (and avoid mistakes)
Before buying at a souk, cooperative or online, check:
- The words cosmetic use or food / edible
- Volume and date / batch
- Composition (pure argan or blend)
- Storage advice
If unsure, ask for “for the face” or “for cooking”. Price criteria: argan oil price in Morocco. Origin context: argan oil Morocco.
When to buy which?
Buy cosmetic for dry skin, ends, hair finish or face duos. Start with 40 or 60 ml.
Buy culinary 250 ml for argan taste in cooking. Do not recycle that bottle as face care.
Buy both only if you truly have both uses — and store them apart so no one grabs the wrong bottle.
Purity, cold-press and marketing confusion
“Pure” and “cold-pressed” mostly describe cosmetic oil (and some quality claims). They do not turn table oil into a serum. Decode the jargon: pure cold-pressed argan oil and what is argan oil.
Storage: two bottles, two habits
Both dislike heat and light. Culinary oil oxidises too; a rancid taste means stop eating it. Rancid cosmetic oil means stop applying it. Details: expiry and comedogenic.
