Argan oil vs coconut, castor and jojoba: which to choose?

Honest comparison: texture, hair/skin uses, dosing and growth myths. One matrix to choose between argan, coconut, castor and jojoba.

On this page
Argan oil vs coconut, castor and jojoba: four bottles fill “natural care” baskets, yet they behave differently. This Biomedica guide is one comparison matrix — not three thin pages — so you pick by texture, gesture (skin or hair) and what science does not prove, especially growth myths.
Context: what is argan oil, benefits and how to use. Catalogue: argan oil category.
Quick table: texture and feel
In a herboristerie, choose by touch first — not by slogan.
- Argan: “medium” oil, often low scent in cosmetic grade, good slip, light-to-moderate film. Ideal as a length finish or thin face layer.
- Coconut: thicker, may solidify with temperature; richer film, sometimes too heavy on fine hair or combination skin.
- Castor: very viscous, sticky if overdosed; useful in tiny amounts, often diluted or blended — never flooded.
- Jojoba: waxy liquid closer to sebum, often a “drier” / lighter feel; liked for light massage or areas that dislike heavy grease.
None of these oils is medicine. They nourish on the surface, soften and support comfort — nothing more in this guide.
When to choose argan oil
Pick argan for a Moroccan all-rounder: hair finish, dry ends, skin that feels tight, without toasted food smell (cosmetic bottle). That is the core of argan oil for hair and argan oil for face.
Biomedica sizes to start: 40 ml cold-pressed, 60 ml, frequent use 100 ml. Duos (not pure argan): argan and prickly pear, argan and rose.
When coconut, castor or jojoba fit better
Coconut
Useful if you like a rich texture, a thick pre-shampoo mask, or body massage in cool climates (it can harden). On very fine hair or skin that clogs easily, try a tiny amount — or prefer argan / jojoba.
Castor
Often searched for “lashes / brows / growth”. Honestly: viscosity explains the protective film people feel — not clinical proof of regrowth for everyone. On beard or ends, one drop is often enough; too much = sticky hair.
Jojoba
A good option if argan still feels too “oily” or you want a lighter sensation. It does not replace argan for the Moroccan hammam / herboristerie gesture — two different sensory profiles.
Hair: finish, frizz, scalp
On lengths, the shared goal is comfort and shine, not an opaque coat. Argan: 1–3 drops as finish (see dry hair and frizz). Coconut: more often as pre-poo. Castor: micro-dose. Jojoba: light finish.
Avoid flooding the scalp “to grow hair”: the myth is covered in argan oil hair growth. For curls and coils, see argan oil for curly and coily hair. Wash-day help: argan detangling conditioner.
Skin and face: thin layers, no miracle
Face: always start with little product. Argan and jojoba suit thin layers better; coconut and castor need more caution on combination skin. Argan detail: face. Body and nails: argan oil for body and nails.
Dosage: the caution that changes everything
- Test 1–2 drops first (face / ends) or a tiny dab (body).
- Wait for absorption before adding more.
- Reduce if greasy film, flat hair or a stifling feel remains.
- Do not swap cosmetic and culinary “because it is argan”: two uses, two labels.

What science does not prove (growth myths)
Neither argan nor castor is presented here as a treatment for baldness, alopecia or “guaranteed growth”. Softer hair or easier detangling is not proof of densification. At Biomedica we stay cosmetic: comfort, surface nourishment, finish.
Pregnancy / special skin: read the argan oil pregnancy guide first and, if unsure, ask a health professional.
Culinary: only kitchen argan
Among these four, only argan has a distinct culinary format here for seasoning. Do not pour cosmetic coconut / castor / jojoba onto food. Kitchen bottle: culinary argan oil 250 ml.
30-second decision matrix
- Moroccan all-rounder, light–medium finish → argan.
- Rich care / thick pre-poo → coconut (if hair tolerates it).
- Very viscous micro-dose → castor (no growth promise).
- Lighter / “drier” feel → jojoba.
Beard: argan oil for beard. Pre-shampoo oil bath: argan oil pre-shampoo hair mask.

Frequently asked questions
Argan for a light-to-medium finish; coconut for richer / pre-poo care if hair tolerates it. Always test little product.
We do not promise that. Viscosity creates a film; that is not clinical regrowth proof.
Both suit thin layers. Choose by feel (jojoba often lighter) and your tolerance.
Yes in cautious DIY, but every drop counts: start with one oil to judge the result.
No. Kitchen use ≠ skin/hair care. Use the 250 ml culinary bottle only for seasoning.
40 ml to test dosing, 60 ml daily, 100 ml if frequent use — see the argan oil category.
