Argan oil pre-shampoo bath: how to do it

Argan oil pre-poo: amounts by length, leave-on time, double shampoo if needed, then conditioner and finish drops.

On this page
An argan oil pre-shampoo bath (pre-poo) means nourishing the lengths before washing, then rinsing thoroughly. Cosmetic goal: softer detangling, less rough ends — not guaranteed growth. Hair frame: argan oil for hair.
Use a cosmetic bottle, never toasted culinary oil on the scalp. General how-to: how to use argan oil.
When an oil bath makes sense
Dry hair, rough split ends, lengths that “catch” the comb, curly or coily textures that like a pre-care: pre-poo can help. If roots already get oily fast, stay light near the scalp. Frizz angle: dry hair and frizz. Curly / coily: argan oil for curly and coily hair.
How much oil by length?
- Bob / mid-length: about 1–2 teaspoons, mainly mid-lengths and ends.
- Long: 2–3 teaspoons, spread in thin layers.
- Very long / dense: up to 1 tablespoon, without flooding the roots.
These are starting points: too little beats too much. Handy bottles: 60 ml, 100 ml for frequent rituals, 40 ml to try.
Pre-poo steps
- Dry or lightly damp hair (towel, not dripping).
- Spread oil from mid-lengths to ends; avoid a thick coat on the scalp if roots grease quickly.
- Wide-tooth comb or fingers to even it out.
- Cap or towel if you want fewer stains.
- Leave 20–60 minutes, or overnight if your scalp tolerates it (protect the pillow).
- Shampoo: massage well, rinse; two passes if lengths still feel greasy.
- Follow with argan detangling conditioner.
- Dry, then 1–3 finish drops on ends only.
Overnight variant
Night leave-on: moderate dose, cap or scarf, protected pillow. In the morning, patient shampoo — do not skip rinsing. If the scalp stings or itches oddly, shorten the next leave-on.
After washing: detangler then finish
Shampoo removes the oil film; conditioner restores slip. Finish drops are not a second oil bath. Beard logic differs: argan oil for beard.
Common mistakes
- Roots too oily — sticky look, hard shampoo; keep oil on the lengths.
- Food oil — toasted scent, kitchen use; not haircare. See cosmetic vs culinary and culinary 250 ml.
- No rinse / one weak shampoo — greasy residue, dust that sticks.
- “Half the bottle” dose — waste and impossible rinse.
Sensible frequency
Once a week or every two weeks suits many dry hair types. Fine or oily hair: rarer pre-poo, lower dose. Judge the dry finish, not marketing promises.
After a harsh scalp scrub or recent colour, wait until the scalp feels calm before a long oil bath. Persistent itch or patches are no longer a cosmetic topic: seek advice.
Pure vs duos for the oil bath
A pure argan bottle simplifies rinsing and label reading: pure cold-pressed. Duos (prickly pear, rose) work if you like their texture — always read the INCI. Oil comparison: argan vs coconut, castor, jojoba.
What the oil bath does not promise
No medical regrowth, no guaranteed density, no cure for scalp disease. Growth myths: argan oil hair growth. Realistic benefits: benefits.

Frequently asked questions
Often 20–60 minutes; overnight is possible if the scalp tolerates it, with careful shampoo in the morning.
Yes if lengths still feel greasy after the first pass. Better to rinse well than leave a sticky film.
Not on hair. Keep the food bottle for cooking; use labelled cosmetics.
About 2–3 teaspoons in thin layers, mainly mid-lengths and ends — adjust for density.
A detangling conditioner, then a few finish drops on dry ends.
We do not promise that. It targets softness and length comfort, not medical growth.
